How the PSA home test works

Avoid ejaculation and vigorous exercise for 48 hours before testing. Both raise PSA for a while.

  1. Prick your finger

    Prick your finger

Wash your hands, clean a fingertip with the alcohol pad and press the lancet against the side of it.

  2. Add blood and buffer

    Add blood and buffer

Fill the pipette to the line, drop it into the sample well, then add 2 drops of buffer.

  3. Read at 15 minutes

    Read at 15 minutes

Don’t read it after 20 minutes, as the result may no longer be correct.

Understanding your result

Read your test at 15 minutes. Don’t read it after 20 minutes.

  • Below 4 ng/mL

    One line at C only

  • At or above 4 ng/mL

Two lines, even if faint. Take the result to your GP to arrange a laboratory PSA test

  • Invalid

No line at C. The test hasn’t worked

Good to know

This test doesn’t replace advice from a doctor. A raised PSA has many causes, and a normal result doesn’t rule out prostate problems. See your GP if you have symptoms such as needing to pee more often or difficulty peeing.

When should I test?

Any time: PSA has no window period

Wait 48 hours: after ejaculation, cycling or vigorous exercise

Wait 6 weeks: after a urine infection or prostate procedure

All of these raise PSA for a while and can give a false high.

What if my result shows two lines?

Your PSA is at or above 4 ng/mL. That doesn’t mean you have cancer: infections, an enlarged prostate and recent exercise can all raise it. Take the result to your GP to arrange a laboratory PSA test.

What can raise my PSA?

Ejaculation, cycling and vigorous exercise in the last 48 hours, or a urine infection or prostate procedure in the last 6 weeks. Wait before testing to avoid a false high.
