What are hepatitis B and C?
Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are viruses that affect the liver. Hepatitis B can be passed on through sex without a condom, and both can be passed on through blood, for example by sharing needles. They can cause symptoms such as tiredness, a high temperature or yellowing of the skin and eyes, but many people have no noticeable symptoms at all.
Many adults clear hepatitis B on their own within a few months. If it lasts longer, treatment can help protect your liver. Hepatitis C can usually be cured with antiviral tablets.
Is this for you?
You don’t need to have symptoms to test. Hepatitis B and C can cause no noticeable symptoms.
It may be worth testing if:
- You’ve had sex without a condom
- You have a new sexual partner, or more than one
- A sexual partner has told you they have hepatitis B, hepatitis C or another STI
- You’ve shared needles or other equipment for injecting drugs
- You’d rather test privately at home

How does the test work?
The test checks a small finger-prick blood sample for both viruses. For hepatitis B, it looks for hepatitis B surface antigen, a protein from the virus itself, which shows whether you have hepatitis B now. For hepatitis C, it looks for antibodies your body makes in response to the virus.
Your result appears on the test cassette in around 15 minutes, with no sample to send to a laboratory.
Prick your finger
Wash your hands and clean your fingertip with an alcohol pad. Let it dry, then use the lancet to prick your finger and form a drop of blood.
Add blood and diluent
Use the pipette to collect your blood. Add it to each sample well on the test cassette, then add the sample diluent, using the number of drops shown in your instructions.
Read your result
Read your result at 15 minutes. Don’t read the test after 20 minutes, as the result may no longer be reliable.
When should I test?
You can take the test at any time, but after a recent exposure it can take time for the test to pick up an infection. If your result is negative, test again at 12 weeks for hepatitis B and at 6 months for hepatitis C.
No need to pin down the date. Two tests and you can stop wondering.
This runs on your device. The date never leaves it: we don’t see it, store it or send it anywhere.
Understanding your result
Read your test between 15 and 20 minutes. Don’t read it after 20 minutes.
The cassette has two windows, one for hepatitis B and one for hepatitis C. Read each one separately. C is the control line. T is the test line.
Negative
One line at C only, in both windows. Hepatitis B and C were not detected.
Hepatitis B positive
Lines at C and T in the hepatitis B window, even if the T line is faint. Hepatitis B was detected.
Hepatitis C positive
Lines at C and T in the hepatitis C window, even if the T line is faint. Hepatitis C antibodies were detected.
Invalid
No line at C in either window. The test has not worked. Contact us and we’ll help.

When should I take a hepatitis B and C test?
You can take the test at any time. However, after a recent exposure it can take time for the test to pick up an infection. If you get a negative result, test again 12 weeks after your most recent exposure for hepatitis B, and 6 months after for hepatitis C.
How soon after a possible exposure can I test?
You can take the test at any time, but testing too early can give a negative result even if you have hepatitis B or C. If your result is negative, test again once 12 weeks have passed for hepatitis B, and 6 months for hepatitis C.
How reliable is this hepatitis B and C rapid test?
When used correctly, this test provides a reliable way to check for hepatitis B and hepatitis C at home.
Testing too soon after exposure can affect your result, so an early negative may need to be repeated. This is a screening test, so a positive result should be followed up with a sexual health clinic or your GP for further testing.
What does a negative result mean?
A negative result means hepatitis B and hepatitis C were not detected by the test. If your possible exposure was recent, you may have tested too early. If you have symptoms or are still concerned, speak to a sexual health clinic or your GP.
What if my result is positive?
If your rapid test is positive for hepatitis B, hepatitis C or both, contact a sexual health clinic or your GP for further testing and treatment if needed. Many adults clear hepatitis B on their own, and treatment can help protect your liver if it lasts longer. Hepatitis C can usually be cured with antiviral tablets. NHS sexual health services are free and confidential.
Can I use this test if I’ve been vaccinated against hepatitis B?
Yes. The hepatitis B vaccine doesn’t cause a positive result on this test, because the test looks for the virus itself, not for the protection the vaccine gives you.
I’ve had hepatitis C before. Can I use this test?
Hepatitis C antibodies can stay in your blood after the infection has cleared or been treated, so the hepatitis C line may still show a positive result. A sexual health clinic or your GP can do a blood test to check whether the virus is still there.
Can I take a hepatitis B and C test while pregnant?
If you’re pregnant and concerned about hepatitis B or C, speak to your midwife, GP or a sexual health clinic. Hepatitis B testing is routinely offered during pregnancy through the NHS.
How fast is shipping?
