What does Core 4 test for?

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are bacterial infections that often cause no symptoms. Left untreated, both can cause long-term health problems. Both can be cured with antibiotics.

HIV is a virus that affects the immune system. It can’t be cured, but treatment is highly effective and lets people with HIV live long, healthy lives.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that can cause a painless sore or rash, or no symptoms at all. It can be cured with antibiotics.

Is this for you?

You don’t need to have symptoms to test. All four infections can cause no noticeable symptoms.

It may be worth testing if:

  • You’ve had sex without a condom
  • You have a new sexual partner, or more than one
  • A sexual partner has told you they have an STI
  • You want to check for the most common STIs in one go
  • You’d rather test privately at home

Your health, your privacy. No one needs to know.

Your test arrives in plain packaging with nothing on the outside to reveal what’s inside. Test privately at home, whenever suits you.

  • ConfidentialYour information stays private.
  • Discreet deliveryNothing on the parcel reveals what’s inside.
  • Private paymentYour bank statement will not show “Test Discreet” or the name of the test.

How do the tests work?

Your bundle has three tests. The chlamydia and gonorrhoea test looks for bacteria in a swab sample. The HIV and syphilis tests look for antibodies in a small finger-prick blood sample.

Each result appears on its own test cassette in around 15 minutes, with no sample to send to a laboratory.

  1. Take your swab

Take the swab for the chlamydia and gonorrhoea test, mix it in the sample tube with the two diluents, then add 3 drops to each sample well on that cassette.

  2. Prick your finger

Clean your fingertip with an alcohol pad and use a lancet to prick it. Add your blood and sample diluent to the HIV and syphilis cassettes, as each test’s instructions show.

  3. Read your results

Read each test at 15 minutes. Don’t read them after 20 minutes, as the results may no longer be reliable.

When should I test?

You can take the tests at any time, but each infection takes a different time to show. If a result is negative, test again at 2 weeks for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, and at 12 weeks for HIV and syphilis. If it’s been less than 72 hours since you may have been exposed to HIV, contact a sexual health clinic or A&E today and ask about PEP.

Test now, and again in 12 weeks.

No need to pin down the date. Two tests and you can stop wondering.

This runs on your device. The date never leaves it: we don’t see it, store it or send it anywhere.

Understanding your result

Read each test separately, between 15 and 20 minutes. On every cassette, C is the control line and T is the test line.

The chlamydia and gonorrhoea test has two windows, one for each infection. Read each window on its own.

  • Negative

One line at C only. That infection was not detected.

  • Positive

Lines at C and T, even if the T line is faint. That infection was detected.

  • Invalid

No line at C. The test has not worked. Contact us and we’ll help.

Good to know

Each test is designed for screening and doesn’t replace advice from a doctor or nurse. For ages 16 and over.

When should I take the tests?

You can take the tests at any time. After a recent exposure, though, each infection takes a different time to show. If you get a negative result, test again 2 weeks after your most recent exposure for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, and 12 weeks after for HIV and syphilis.

Do I have to take all the tests at once?

No. Each test is separate, so you can take them together or at different times. If it’s been less than 12 weeks since sex, you could take the chlamydia and gonorrhoea test now and the HIV and syphilis tests at 12 weeks.

It’s been less than 72 hours since I may have been exposed to HIV. What should I do?

Contact a sexual health clinic or A&E today and ask about PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis). PEP can help stop HIV infection, and it works best the sooner it’s started. You can test with this kit later, once enough time has passed.

How reliable are these rapid tests?

When used correctly, each test provides a reliable way to check for infection at home. In clinical evaluations, 99.81% of syphilis results matched laboratory testing, and 100% of chlamydia and gonorrhoea results matched another commercially available test.

Testing too soon after exposure can affect your result, so an early negative may need to be repeated. These are screening tests, so a positive result should be followed up with a sexual health clinic.

What if a result is positive?

Contact a sexual health clinic for further testing and treatment if needed. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis can be cured with antibiotics, and HIV treatment is highly effective. NHS sexual health services are free and confidential. If an infection is confirmed, recent sexual partners may also need to be tested.

I’ve had syphilis before. Can I use this bundle?

Yes, but the syphilis test may still show a positive result even after successful treatment, because syphilis antibodies can remain in your blood. The other tests aren’t affected. Speak to a sexual health clinic about the right syphilis test for you.

Does the swab test check the throat or bottom?

No. The chlamydia and gonorrhoea test only checks a swab from the cervix or the urethra. If you’ve had oral or anal sex, speak to a sexual health clinic about testing those areas.

Can I use this bundle while pregnant?

If you’re pregnant and concerned about STIs, speak to your midwife, GP or a sexual health clinic. HIV and syphilis testing is routinely offered during pregnancy through the NHS, and they can test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea safely.
