What are chlamydia and gonorrhoea?
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are sexually transmitted bacterial infections. They can cause symptoms such as pain when peeing or unusual discharge, but many people have no noticeable symptoms at all. Left untreated, both can cause long-term health problems, including fertility problems.
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be treated and cured with antibiotics.
Is this for you?
You don’t need to have symptoms to test. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can cause no noticeable symptoms.
It may be worth testing if:
- You’ve had sex without a condom
- You have a new sexual partner, or more than one
- A sexual partner has told you they have chlamydia, gonorrhoea or another STI
- You have possible symptoms, such as pain when peeing or unusual discharge
- You’d rather test privately at home

How does the test work?
The test looks for chlamydia and gonorrhoea bacteria in a swab sample. If you have a cervix, the swab is taken from your cervix. If you have a penis, the swab is taken from just inside the opening of your urethra.
Your result appears on the test cassette in around 15 minutes, with no sample to send to a laboratory.
Take your swab
Wash your hands. If you have a cervix, gently insert the swab 1 to 1.5 cm into your cervix. If you have a penis, don’t pee for 2 hours before testing, then gently insert the swab 2 to 4 cm into the opening of your urethra. Twist the swab a few times and hold it there for 5 to 10 seconds before removing it.
Mix your sample
Add sample diluent A to the tube and put the swab in. Squeeze the tube and twist the swab 15 times, then leave it for 2 minutes. Add sample diluent B, twist the swab 15 times again and leave it for 1 minute. Remove the swab and close the tube.
Add your sample
Add 3 drops from the tube to each sample well on the test cassette.
Read your result
Read your result at 15 minutes. Don’t read the test after 20 minutes, as the result may no longer be reliable.
When should I test?
You can take the test at any time, but after a recent exposure it can take time for there to be enough bacteria for this test to find. If it’s been less than 2 weeks and your result is negative, test again at 2 weeks.
No need to pin down the date. Two tests and you can stop wondering.
This runs on your device. The date never leaves it: we don’t see it, store it or send it anywhere.
Understanding your result
Read your test between 15 and 20 minutes. Don’t read it after 20 minutes.
The cassette has two windows, one marked Ct (chlamydia) and one marked Ng (gonorrhoea). Read each one separately. C is the control line. T is the test line.
Negative
One line at C only, in both windows. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea were not detected.
Chlamydia positive
Lines at C and T in the Ct window, even if the T line is faint. Chlamydia was detected.
Gonorrhoea positive
Lines at C and T in the Ng window, even if the T line is faint. Gonorrhoea was detected.
Invalid
No line at C in either window. The test has not worked. Contact us and we’ll help.

When should I take a chlamydia and gonorrhoea test?
You can take the test at any time. However, after a recent exposure it can take time for there to be enough bacteria for this test to find. If you test less than 2 weeks after your most recent exposure and get a negative result, test again at 2 weeks.
How soon after sex can I test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea?
You can take the test at any time, but testing too early can give a negative result even if you have chlamydia or gonorrhoea. If it has been less than 2 weeks since the sexual contact you’re concerned about and your result is negative, test again once 2 weeks have passed.
How reliable is this chlamydia and gonorrhoea rapid test?
When used correctly, this test provides a reliable way to check for chlamydia and gonorrhoea at home. In a clinical evaluation of 1,000 samples, 100% of results matched another commercially available test.
Rapid tests are generally less sensitive than the laboratory tests used by clinics, and a swab that isn’t taken correctly can affect your result. If you have symptoms or are still concerned after a negative result, speak to a sexual health clinic. This is a screening test, so a positive result should be followed up with a sexual health clinic for further testing.
What does a negative chlamydia and gonorrhoea test result mean?
A negative result means chlamydia and gonorrhoea were not detected by the test. If your possible exposure was within the last 2 weeks, you may have tested too early. Test again at 2 weeks. If you have symptoms or are still concerned, speak to a sexual health clinic.
What if my result is positive?
If your rapid test is positive for chlamydia, gonorrhoea or both, contact a sexual health clinic for further testing and treatment. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are treatable and can be cured with antibiotics. NHS sexual health services are free and confidential. If an infection is confirmed, recent sexual partners may also need to be tested.
I’ve recently been treated. Can I test again?
Bacteria can remain for a short time after treatment, so this test may still show a positive result. Follow the advice of the clinic that treated you about when to test again.
Does this test check for infections in the throat or bottom?
No. This test only checks a swab from the cervix or the urethra. If you’ve had oral or anal sex, speak to a sexual health clinic about testing those areas.
Can I take a chlamydia and gonorrhoea test while pregnant?
If you’re pregnant and concerned about chlamydia or gonorrhoea, speak to your midwife, GP or a sexual health clinic before taking a swab. They can test you safely and arrange treatment if needed.
